Demersal: Hake Long Line
Hake is one of Rial Fishing Group products that are rendered for human consumption.
The Rial group has partnered up with Pescaluna East Coast Pty Ltd to market our species. The hake is predominantly caught in the Hout Bay area by vessels Olivia Marie, Boloko 1 and Augusta 1.
Our species are caught by the Cape Padrone in the Eastern Cape. The type of fishing known as Longlining began in 1982. The fish can be caught along the west and south coasts and able to operate in both offshore and inshore waters.
Hake averages around 0.45 to 3.63 kg in weight and 1 metre in length, but the species can grow to a whopping 27 kg, in rare circumstances with a lifespan that can reach up to 14 years. Male and female species are difficult to distinguish due to their similar appearance.
This species can be located in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Ranging from depths of 200–350 metres deep. This species can be found in shallow waters during the evening but prefer to remain in the deep during the day. As a predator it feeds on other fish close or on the bottom of the ocean.
